Someday your health care provider may ask you how many antibiotics you have taken, along with your smoking history – to predict your risk of developing lung cancer.
A study looking at the medical records of over 3 million people in Finland, found a link between the use of antibiotics, and subsequent risk of cancer. Information about antibiotics prescribed according to the Drug Prescription Registry between 1995 and 1997, was compared with cancers reported to the Finnish Cancer Registry from 1998 to 2004. Those individuals who had been given 2 to 5 antibiotic prescriptions were 25% more likely to have developed cancer, than those who had 0 to 1 prescriptions. The increased risk broken down for different cancers was:
- Lung cancer – 79%
- Prostate cancer – 39%
- Colon cancer – 15%
- Breast cancer – 14%
This study does not imply any cause-and-effect. There is nothing to indicate that antibiotics cause lung cancer. Perhaps a common factor, such as a sluggish immune system or lifestyle issues are the common bond. But it does serve as a reminder to use antibiotics only when they are clearly indicated for an infection. With resistance to antibiotics increasing, and the potential for side effects from antibiotics substantial, a link with cancer is not the only concern.

Just wanted to let you know that I am very impressed by your manner of blogging. I like how you apply research to how patients can benefit from it. I am going to try and emulate what you do, as I think I have been lacking in that regard. Since we are closely related, I will probably do some articles on the link between the two and crosslink with you. If you have any special articles, I would also like to feature you in my hot picks for next week’s newsletter. Thanks again for your wonderful inspiration.
Another risk of developing lung or other types of cancer include radiation therapy. Radiation therapy or Radiotherapy is the use of ionizing radiation to kill or control the growth of malignant or cancerous cells. Radiotherapy is used as a palliative treatment option for patients suffering from mesothelioma lung cancer because no definite cure is available for this disease. The basic theory behind radiotherapy is that it uses energy waves or particles to destroy cancer cells & tumor masses. In other cases, radiotherapy is used to prevent future tumor cells from growing; where no present cancer cells can be found. There are 3 types of radiation therapy; external, internal, and systemic and each of them is discussed below. Radiotherapy is usually confused with radiology which is the use of radiation in medical imaging techniques; they are two different things. Source: http://www.themesotheliomalibrary.com
