Definition of Atelectasis

Definition: Atelectasis refers to the collapse of part or all of a lung. In lung cancer, atelectasis can be due to obstruction of the airways by a tumor, or from pressure on the lungs from a tumor. Atelectasis is common following surgery, especially chest surgery.
