Definition:

Beta carotene is a vitamin found in certain foods, especially those that are bright yellow, orange or dark green. In the body, beta carotene is converted to a form of vitamin A known as retinol. A diet high in foods rich in beta-carotene is thought to lower the risk of lung cancer.

On the other side of the equation, supplements of beta carotene given to smokers are associated with a greater risk of developing lung cancer.
