Wedge Resection - Definition of Wedge Resection

Definition: A wedge resection is a type of lung cancer surgery in which the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed.

A wedge resection is usually performed for very small lung cancers. With larger lung cancers, a lobectomy or pneumonectomy are usually the preferred surgical procedures.

Examples:
Since Jeremy's lung cancer is quite small, his surgeon thought a wedge resection would be the best procedure to remove it.
