New York Quits Smoking Day - For Health and Your Wallet!
New York Governor, David A. Paterson has declared June 3rd “New York Quits Smoking Day.” This coincides with a cigarette tax hike that leaves New Yorkers paying the highest cigarette tax in the nation.
New York State cigarette tax was increased by $1.25, bring the total tax on a single pack of cigarettes to $2.75. In the city, tack on another $1.50 to bring the total tax to $4.25. Since most people begin smoking in the teen years, it is hoped that the increased cost will discourage teens from starting in the first place. State Health Commissioner Dr. Richard F. Daines stated, “Today is a great day in New York because this tax increase will save thousands of lives.” According to the Campaign for Tobacco Free kids, the tax will save 37,000 New York residents from smoking related deaths.
If you still need motivation, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene website lists a number of things you can do with the savings from quitting smoking, a habit that will now cost more than $8/day in the city.
About.com’s Smoking Cessation Guide, Terry Martin offers Prepare to Quit Smoking, a free email course to aid you or your loved ones in kicking the habit.
